Having done extensive research in government archives, educational institutions and with private enterprise throughout Latin America, I have translated books and journal articles into English, as well as English texts into Spanish, and have supervised others doing so as well.
The author of three books on Latin America, one of the several critically-praised studies that I wrote was in Spanish and focused on the history of the Argentine police. In addition, I have worked in every Spanish-speaking country in the region, except Cuba, although I did carry on a kitchen debate with Fidel Castro in La Paz, Bolivia, some 20 years ago.
During my time as a senior adviser for policy planning at the Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, I was responsible for translating important policy papers, as well treaties and other criminal justice correspondence, for the Attorney General and her senior staff. (I also oversaw translation work in Russian, Portuguese and Polish at the same time.)
Later, as an assistant professor at the National Defense University, I was the editor-in-chief of a highly successful peer-reviewed journal on security challenges in the Americas that included articles in Spanish and Portuguese.
Although I have limited experience in community interpreting, I have served as an interpreter for many Members of the United States Congress, a former U.S. Vice President, the late Prime Minister Adolfo Suarez, and several presidents in the Americas.
